KWI AWT STELMEXW
An Arts & Education Society
Kwi Awt Stelmexw is an independent Sḵwx̱wú7mesh arts & education organization that creates trainings, develops resources, and builds intergenerational partnerships in favour of redress.
INDIGENOUS LANGUAGES SAVE LIVES
In the future, our people will write letters to their ancestors thanking them for working so hard to bring the language back into the hearts and lives of our Squamish Peoples. Over the next few years, Kwi Awt Stelmexw in partnership with funders, the Squamish Nation, and others will develop the Squamish Language Action Plan to outline the community vision for our language. In addition to this, Kwi Awt Stelmexw develops programs and products to support families learning the Squamish Language. "Because we have become fluent, our community is healthier, stronger, and more connected." our great-grandchildren will say.
CONNECTING WITH BIRTHRIGHTS
The Squamish Language is what connects the Squamish People together. Kwi Awt Stelmexw is a not-for-profit organization that creates programs in the Squamish Peoples’ territory to restore the Squamish Language as the primary language of communication within Squamish communities. Starting September 2016, Kwi Awt Stelmexw is co-hosting a eight-month language immersion program with SFU’s First Nations’ Languages Centre with a cohort of 16 students completing 1000 hours of instruction in the language. Kwi Awt Stelmexw looks to develop opertunities for more Squamish People becoming speakers of our sacred language.
