What makes a community be together?

People need culture - and for two years, Kwi Awt Stelmexw has worked to advance it. Founded by Indigenous people of the Squamish Peoples, we are putting ideas forward to advance Squamish cultural and linguistic identity. We are the people of Vancouver, the North Shore, Howe Sound, and Squamish Valley.

What We Do

Language Education

Kwi Awt Stelmexw has developed cutting-edge and effective language education programs. The goal: create more fluent speakers. The intended outcome: a vibrant community strengthened by the use of a common heritage language.

Creating Moments

We host events to invite all to join in the work. We’ve hosted panels, talks, and galas. We would say we ḵéx̱wen ("gather the people"). Our next major project is to host a cultural arts festival where authentic cultural growth happens and is celebrated.

Language Centre Project

Where there is space for things to grow, they grow. Our dream is to build a 4,000 square foot Language Centre in the Squamish Nation where the language is protected and used exclusively. "What the people do with the land defines who we are."
