Continuing Our Visioning Work for the Squamish Language
Join Kwi Awt Stelmexw on March 12th for the Honouring Language Champions & Visioning Cafe. Come together with fellow Squamish Peoples to celebrate our community’s efforts to revitalize Skwxwú7mesh Sníchim, and to collaborate on strategies to strengthen the language in the years to come. This event will honour Skwxwú7mesh language work of the past, present, and future.
Sunday, March 12th, 12pm-5pm
Joseph & Rosalie Segal Centre
SFU Harbour Centre room #1400
515 West Hastings Street
What to expect:
Enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by Indigenous chefs, served from 12pm-1pm, followed by a special ceremony to honour the language warriors who have worked tirelessly to promote and preserve Skwxwú7mesh Sníchim.
At 2pm, facilitator Chris Corrigan will lead us in World Café style discussions to co-create a strategic vision for Skwxwú7mesh Sníchim. We will have small and large group discussions to review the work that has been done for the language, and all the possibilities for the language in the years to come.
This work will build on the Visioning Café for the Squamish Language hosted by Kwi Awt Stelmexw in 2016, and the follow-up work to create a Vision Statement for Skwxwú7mesh Sníchim. Through that work, the following vision statement was developed:
The Squamish people are connected, united, and empowered through the preservation of Skwxwú7mesh Sníchim. Squamish people of all generations have access to Skwxwú7mesh Sníchim education and resources. The language is welcomed, spoken, and enjoyed throughout the entire community. We honour the teachings of our ancestors, and carry them forward for present and future generations. The power of revitalization is within each one of us.
This Vision Statement is currently open for feedback at this link. Please feel free to share your thoughts about the statement before March 10. A finalized version of the Vision Statement will be unveiled at the Squamish Language Café so that we can begin the next states of our language plan.
The objectives of this event is to understand the language work that is currently underway, and to collaborate on developing goals and strategies for the work that is still needed to turn our Vision Statement into a reality.
Who should participate?
People with Squamish ancestry who have been involved, would like to be involved, or have ideas about, revitalization and maintenance of Skwxwú7mesh Sníchim. We welcome students, teachers, elders, Language in the Homes participants, and anybody else who is passionate about our language. Participants should come ready to collaborate with other community members on establishing the goals and actions we will take as a collective to revitalize and strengthen Skwxwú7mesh Sníchim.
Free for all Squamish peoples.
