How To Learn An Indigenous Language
February 4, 2016 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm$5
COME JOIN Kwi Awt Stelmexw and SFU’s Vancity Office of Community Engagement for this special panel event featuring three Indigenous language activists working on the frontlines to rebuild their respective language communities and hear what they have to say about “HOW TO LEARN AN INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE”:
AARON WILLIAMS is a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) from Eslhá7an and a second-language Squamish Language speaker currently conducting a “Master-Apprentice Program” with two fluent speakers from his community. For Aaron the task is to complete 300+ hours of immersion — meaning staying 100% in the language — to increase his knowledge, speaking skills, and ability to add to the growing number of Squamish Language speakers.
GABRIEL GEORGE is a səl̓il̓wət (Tsleil-waut) from sʔəθnəc. For the past number of years he has been the Manager of the Language & Culture Program at the Tsleil-Waututh Nation. Gabriel is currently leading the revitalization of downriver HALKOMELEM (hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓) with a team after decades of his community having no first-language speakers of their ancestral language.
TEYOTSIHSTOKWÁTHE DAKOTA BRANT is a Kanyen’kehá:ka (Mohawk) from Six Nations, Ontario. She is currently enrolled as a full-time student in the Mohawk Immersion Program in the Mohawk Language School called Onkwawenna Kentyohkwa in her home community of Six Nations. Teyotsihstokwáthe will complete two to three years of full-time language immersion (about 1,000 classroom hours per year) to become a fluent and proficient speaker of her ancestral language. Dakota will join the event by video-conference.
