TEMSTL’Í7 TA SNÍCHIM: The Adult Immersion Program
Kwi Awt Stelmexw, in partnership with Simon Fraser University’s First Nations Language Proficiency Certificate Program, has created a full-time adult immersion program for Squamish language acquisition. This program that has been named “Temstl’i7 ta Snichim”, is modeled after similar programs in the Mohawk Nation, Maori language programs in Aotearoa (New Zealand), the “Master-Apprentice Program”, and others.
An advisory panel will select 10-15 students participate in the program, starting in September 2016. To be selected, students must submit a cover letter, two reference letters, and a completed application to the program. The program application guidelines, application form, and selection criteria are available on our website, and at many Squamish Nation and Tsleil-Waututh facilities.
This program has been in development for three years, and we are excited to offer it to our communities. This program is intended for younger learners between the ages of 18-40. Members of any First Nation are welcome to apply, but priority will be given to students of Squamish ancestry.
The application deadline to be considered for the program is March 18th, 2016 at 5pm PST.
